Ewen heaved a big sigh of relief when the Cessna finally came to a stop on the runway. With quick, practiced movements, Tempe unbuckled her harness and stood, before Ewen even had a chance to get his bearings after that ordeal. The fire of a battle won lit her eyes and energy crackled around her. The woman was truly amazing.

“You did good, Scottie Boy. Now step it up because I’m sure the admiral’s waiting on the tarmac, ready to ream me out.”

He grabbed her hand before she could leave the cockpit. “Later, we’re going to talk about that kiss.”

She shrugged as if it wasn’t a big deal, and for some reason that didn’t sit well with him. He should be happy it didn’t mean anything to her, because there couldn’t ever be anything between them. She was keeping secrets, and so was he.

Unhooking his harness, he followed her out of the plane. By the time his feet hit the ground, Tempe was standing at attention in front of a man he assumed to be Admiral Brawley. The admiral had the perfect military presence, with a trim body outfitted in a high-ranking uniform. Silver winged his temples, showcasing his black hair, and his mouth was moving at a rapid speed.

Ewen chuckled. It appeared as if Tempe was correct in expecting what she called a “reaming out.” He headed in their direction, and when he reached hearing distance, the one-way conversation halted.

Tempe nodded at Ewen as he stopped beside her.

“Sir,” she said, “this is Ewen Duncan. He helped auto-land the 172.”

Admiral Brawley pierced Ewen with intelligent, laser-sharp cobalt blue eyes and gave a short nod. “We appreciate your help. You’ll need to be debriefed along with Lieutenant Commander Calloway.”

Ewen grinned at Tempe. It was interesting to see her in a different element as compared to the cowgirl at the ranch. “Happy to do my part.”

And mystifyingly enough, he found he was feeling happy, which didn’t make any sense after the experience he’d just undergone. Even with the thrill of analyzing and interpreting data for the DIA, he was stunned to realize he’d been somewhat dissatisfied with his life. Not that he wanted to spend a lifetime with a woman as adventurous as Tempe, or any woman, for that matter, but it did open his eyes.

The admiral dismissed them, but just as they turned to walk away, Brawley raised his voice. “And Temper, good job getting the 172 on the ground in one piece.”

Tempe gave her boss a wide grin and Ewen’s heart lifted even more. The debriefing didn’t take but an hour or so, and when they left the building, Tempe took long strides toward another smaller building.

“It’s getting late. Shall we pick up some dinner and locate a hotel?”

She came to a sudden stop and pivoted on her heel, facing him. “Listen, Ewen, you did real good up there today, and I appreciate it, but you were right when you said we need to talk, mainly about where you came across those way-above-average computer skills, but first we have to get something over with.
